WNH MS Optima 9403

9403 was a class winner at the WW Fair. She was shown right out of the pasture. She had the highest weaning and yearling weights in her contemporary group, which included three National Champions (9401, 9411 and 9422). She is a very easy fleshing and a very easy doing female. Her first calf was born in late February, her second calf was born in early January, and her third calf was born in November, 1997, giving her a calving interval of 334 days through her first 3 calves. Her first calf was born when she was 25 months old. Note her dam is a Gold Benchmark Dam. Decathlete was the sire of her second calf, 9801, while Maximum is the sire of her 1999 calf.  Easy Doer 9707 is the sire of her first calf of the new Mellenium.

9403 is so easy doing that she got too much milk from her Gold Benchmark Dam, and that caused fatty deposits in her udder before she was weaned, and we think that has inhibited her milking ability.  We expect her daughters, however, to be great milkers, as was her dam.  We have seen this kind of alternate generation phenomenon in many of our great milking Hereford cows.  If you look at the materanl side of her pedigree, you can see that in her pedigree her dam was a GBM dam, and then a generation is skipped and her great grandam was also a GBM dam.

Some may see 9403 as just an ugly old cow with some poor EPDs, and they would probably think she should be culled.  But a cow should be evaluated on the basis of the kind of calves she produces, and this is is what 9403 has produced the last three years:

9801 is as nice a heifer and as nice a young brood cow as any we have produced recently.

9901 is a heavy muscled bull that was our top seller at the WSU/WCA Bull Test.  He had the largest actual ribeye of any of the 36 Hereford Bulls on test.  He was also 6th highest in marbling, and was our second highest indexing bull on performance.
